Disaster Recovery: Prevention and Recovery
You put your coffee cup down on your desk
first thing in the morning and hit the power button on your computer as you
start your day.
After a few seconds you see...nothing.
A sinking feeling forms in the pit of your stomach.
Instantly, fear grips you as you contemplate life without your QuickBooks
files, your cherished family pictures or $1000 in iTunes music.
Prevention
ALWAYS BACKUP UP YOUR FILES -- FREQUENTLY
So many people we talk to never call us until after
disaster strikes. That's like calling the doctor for the first time
after you have a heart attack. The health of your computer is as easy
to achieve as your own good health; see a professional regularly. A
Royal Geek can give your computer an annual checkup to insure good health,
identify problems early and apply treatments to make your computer run as
good as (or better than!) new. Part of our preventative maintenance program
is putting in place a regular backup regimen that keeps your data safe and
secure.
The best backup solution I've ever seen is
Carbonite. It works automatically
around the clock to backup files on your computer that have been added or
changed. No need to run (or forget to run!) backup
software, no CDs or DVDs to swap in and out of your computer.
Carbonite lets you backup any amount of data through your DSL or cable
Internet connection. Your data is safely stored on super-strong servers
hosted by Carbonite; no matter how much data you have.
Let me repeat that; Carbonite gives you unlimited,
automatic daily backups for about $5 per month. This is the real deal.
I use Carbonite myself and, so far, I have 70 Gigabytes or so of data backed
up with no limit or space warnings or anything else. It just works.
If you have confidential client files, personal records,
etc. you can breathe easy; using a double-hashed encryption key to store all
data- absolutely nobody can access your files except you. Every single
file you back up is safe, sound and secure against system crashes, hard
drive failures, accidental deletion and prying eyes.
The only thing you'd need to keep in case of a total
system failure are your program disks. That's because Carbonite safely
stores every file on their servers so you can recover all of your data, but
you will need to reload all of your software (Office, QuickBooks, World of
Warcraft, etc.) so it's critical you keep all of your software CDs/DVDs in
an easy-to-find place.
Try Carbonite free for two weeks and see for
yourself.
Did you know that most hard drives are
destined to fail -- eventually?
KEEP YOUR SECURITY SOFTWARE WORKING FOR YOU
So many cases of data loss stem from a truly nasty
virus that intentionally wipes Office files (Microsoft Word documents, Excel
spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, etc.) and other well-known file
types such as pictures (JPG, GIF, etc.) and Adobe PDF files. Keeping
your security software (firewall/antivirus/spyware) up to date and running
frequent scans will curb all but the most destructive infections.
Recovery
STOP USING YOUR COMPUTER!
Continually trying to reboot your computer as you try
to get Windows started almost never works but almost always causes further
damage to your system which makes the problem grow.
